Call for papers for a special issue of Regional Science Policy and Practice until December 15, 2017

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/10.1111/(ISSN)1757-7802

One often consider that rural territories are not innovative. Innovation would be mainly reserved for urban spaces and in particular for big cities, as revealed by the concentration of high tech firms and clusters in an urban environment. However, this preconceived idea meets two important limits. The first one is the existence of a very successful and very innovative farming sector, to the point that agriculture only employs nowadays an increasingly small number of workers, due to technical progress, in particular in Europe and in the USA, as well as in BRICs like Brazil for example. Agriculture and forestry are also the stage for intensive agro-ecological knowledge creation towards more sustainable farming processes and practices, involving both scientists and farmers. The second is that numerous innovations are emerging in rural areas highlighting non-technological types of innovation, like organizational innovations (new forms of networks between actors, direct marketing and local markets…), social innovations (cooperatives, services to the population…) and institutional innovations (Leader Programs, local charters…) along with product (superfoods, healthcare services and renewable energy) and technological innovations (the methanation for example).

This special issue aims to make the state of the art about innovations in rural areas, by describing various experiences, and by giving solid references onto the level of rural innovation and the characteristics of the latter, which bring new knowledge about innovation and support to policies to enhance it on rural territories.

Call for Abstracts

The Regional Science Association International (RSAI) and the Regional Science Association of India invite regional scientists, economists, economic geographers, urban planners, policy makers, and researchers of related disciplines to participate in the 12th World Congress of the Regional Science Association International, with the main theme "Spatial Systems: Social Integration, Regional Development and Sustainability". The Congress will be hosted by the Regional Science Association of India.

We invite formal paper presentations (deadline of November 30, 2017. The abstract submission portal is now open. Full information on the venue, abstract submission, registration, schedule of events, accommodation and travel information is posted at www.regionalscience.org/2018worldcongress

About the Focal Theme

Across the world, communities are striving to achieve an ecologically and socially secure future. The intricately linked ideas of sustainability and integration are the key to achieving our development goals. As regional scientists, our common pursuit of a sustainable future may be attained with more efficient understanding of the ‘region’ as a spatial unit. Keeping this objective in mind, the theme of the 2018 Congress highlights the importance of analyzing spatial systems as not just physical space or social space, but shared space. The sub-themes will be aimed at providing a platform for debates and discussions around the key issues of contemporary regional science and carve out the way to future research agenda.

Hello,

We are seeking contributors for the book “Smart Specialization Strategies and the Role of Entrepreneurial Universities” , an edition IGI-Global foreseen for 2018.

The main objective of this book is to provide a comprehensive review of the relation between the role entrepreneurial universities are playing on the context of the creation of smart specialization strategies, either in conceptual and methodological terms, either in terms of the challenges it raises in terms of regional innovation policy and the impact on territorial competitiveness. The book also aims to describe and examine diverse case studies, looking in particular at the relevance of design, implementation, adjustment, governance, networking and collaboration entrepreneurial universities adopt or promote to reinforce regional competitiveness in the context of smart specialization strategies.

Bellow you can find more information regarding the call. Please feel free to share with your colleagues and research network.

Please forgive eventual cross-postings.

Regards,

Nuno Caseiro & Domingos Santos

Call for Chapters

Proposals Submission Deadline: September 30, 2017
Full Chapters Due: December 30, 2017

Introduction

To be competitive in the global arena, regions must be capable of develop key capabilities in the exploitations of their resources and strengths. Smart specialization strategies are a new approach to the problem of competitiveness and differentiation in global arena assuming that the “one size fits all” model cannot be the solution to the problem.
To accomplish this, higher education institutions are key partners as a driver to innovation, knowledge and social capital building and valuation, as well as, pivotal institutions for strategy formulation and foresight and scenario building. The links between the entrepreneurial university paradigm and the implementation of smart specialization strategies are thus discussed as a means to deepen the understanding of this institutional, entrepreneurial and territorial dynamics that is evolving towards a new competitive paradigm based on knowledge and innovation.

Objective

The theoretical concept of the ‘entrepreneurial university’ is something of a buzzword amongst academics and policy makers alike. Yet the concept is under-theorised and has proven difficult to translate into a concrete policy approach. Smart specialization strategies have, however, enhanced our theoretical understanding and provided policy makers and other actors in the regional economy with a practical tool for tackling some of the underlying problems faced by territories suffering from economic decline, stagnation or under-development in the field of innovation. The main objective of the book is to provide a comprehensive review of the relation between the role entrepreneurial universities are playing on the context of the creation of smart specialization strategies, either in conceptual and methodological terms, either in terms of the challenges it raises in terms of regional innovation policy and the impact on territorial competitiveness. The book also aims to describe and examine diverse case studies, looking in particular at the relevance of design, implementation, adjustment, governance, networking and collaboration entrepreneurial universities adopt or promote to reinforce regional competitiveness in the context of smart specialization strategies.
The publication has its impact associated to the need that it is urgent and vital to continue to rethink the role universities can fullfil on their territories, now, more than ever before, that society requires higher education institutions to be increasingly territorially embedded and at the same time to be global scientific and technological players. Thus, the book can be very helpful and contribute to enrich this debate in the context of a newly emerging paradigm, the entrepreneurial university.
The book value is potentially associated to its innovative analytical dimensions, the richness of the different authors' contributions and the high quality academic standards the editors guarantee.

Target Audience

The target audience is constituted by academics and students from different disciplinary areas, such as economy, geography, entrepreneurial studies, innovation studies, political sciences, public administration,… Moreover, policy makers, at local regional and national level, are also a target, as well as other regional actors, namely belonging to the university management sphere, entrepreneurial associations, local and regional associations, …
The potential use is both for academic purposes, due to its scientific and pedagogic levels, at graduate and undergraduate levels, and, on a way, a manual and guide for the diverse regional innovation stakeholders.
