Nomination and Selection Protocol of RSAI Fellows

  1. Each RSAI member - except RSAI fellows – is entitled to nominate candidates for the RSAI fellowship, but self-nominations are not allowed. Each nomination has to be done through a standard concise nomination form that follows a systematic template, which can be downloaded from the RSAI website.
  2. A nominee has to be RSAI member (or a member of any section recognized by the RSAI) and to meet the qualifications mentioned in Annex A.
  3. The selection of new RSAI fellows takes place only once a year, but nominations can be sent in at any time and will be considered for a given selection round, if they have been received before a given deadline. A nomination has a maximum life of two years.
  4. All nominations will be put on a list supplemented with non-elected candidates for the RSAI fellowship who were on the short list from the previous year.
  5. The short list will be screened by the RSAI fellows selection committee (in consultation with the RSAI director). This committee comprises 3 RSAI fellows appointed by the RSAI Council for a period of staggered 3-year terms. The selection committee has to seriously consider all available information on the candidates and can remove candidates (unanimous vote) who do not qualify.
  6. The selection committee can also decide to reduce the list of nominated RSAI members to a manageable number, so that candidates can be selected with a qualified majority. This short list should normally not contain more than 10 to 12 names.
  7. The short list is next circulated to all RSAI fellows, who have the exclusive right to vote for (a maximum of) 3 candidate-fellows. No ranking of candidates is allowed.
  8. The selection committee can put an upper ceiling on the maximum number of candidates to be selected in a given year, if circumstances dictate so.
  9. A vote of at least 1/3 will normally mean election, unless that would exceed the ceiling.
  10. The selection committee informs the RSAI Director of the final selection results, who will communicate these results to the selected RSAI fellows, the RSAI Council, and the home institutions of the newly appointed fellows.

Standard Nomination Form for RSAI Fellows

  1. Factual bio-data on candidate, including a proof for RSAI membership
  2. Professional career of candidate (max. 100 words)

"The Geography of craft beer brewing and consumption: local entrepreneurialism and tourism development” is the title of the next RSAI-GSSI Summer Workshop organized by the Gran Sasso Science Institute (GSSI) area of Social Sciences, in cooperation with the Regional Science Association International (RSAI), the North American Regional Science Association (NARSC) and the University of Toledo.

The event is intended to provide a unique opportunity to pre-doctoral students and early career scholars (Associate Professors or below) to actively participate in a 2-day workshop focused on the role that craft breweries can play in economic and tourism development at a variety of scales - neighbourhood, city, and regional. The last session of the workshop will be dedicated to the pre-doctoral students, who will have a chance to present their research topics and receive feedback from internationally renowned Professors and early career scholars working on similar topics. In addition to that, two relevant case studies will be presented by local entrepreneurs: Apecchio and L’Aquila. Located in the Marche region of Italy, Apecchio is the home to three craft breweries and has used their existence to leverage the village’s tourism industry. L’Aquila is home to two craft brewery (Anbra - Anonima Brasseria Aquilana, and Alkibia). Moreover, the students will have the chance to meet and exchange ideas with the 30 Ph.D. candidates currently enrolled in the “Urban Studies and Regional Science” program at GSSI and 7 postdocs, in an international, multidisciplinary and stimulating environment. GSSI, in collaboration with RSAI and NARSC, will offer 10 scholarships to 2nd or 3rd year doctoral students for an intensive, two-day program with in-depth working sessions on topics related to the practical and theoretical significance of craft-beer brewing in regional development and on local entrepreneurialism. The final aim of this workshop is to provide 10 pre-doctoral and 10 early career scholars (associate professors or below) working on similar research topics with a chance to create a research network on this growing area of research. Favouring informal knowledge exchange (during lunches, social events and a craft beer tasting event) will be an integral part of the workshop. We also plan a number of follow-up activities. These include a special issue of a refereed academic journal and the organization of special sessions at regional science conferences such as NARSC and ERSA. The Workshop format is a 2-day meeting. It includes time for research, discussion and paper presentations – combining conventional parallel workshop sessions, plenary sessions and keynote speeches, where the participants can present their current research projects.

Call for papers is now open, the deadline for applications is March 31st 2018.

PROGRAM

CALL FOR PAPERS

The global brewing industry is experiencing dramatic change. The hegemony of large multinational brewing conglomerates such as AB InBev, Heineken, and Carlsberg is being challenged. The challenge comes from thousands of small-scale, locally owned, craft breweries. While craft beer’s popularity is most advanced in North America, Europe, and Australasia, craft breweries are also appearing in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The growth of craft beer's popularity is driven by the millennial demographic (18-35 year olds) who are demanding greater variety in terms of the style, flavour, and strength of the beer that they drink. Another component driving craft beer's success is the growing neolocalism movement, which has manifest itself in growing demand for products made by local producers. Across both North America and Europe, a number of places recognize the potential of craft breweries to contribute to local and regional economic development. In many American cities, for example, craft breweries have emerged as vital pieces in the jigsaw of revitalizing older distressed neighbourhoods (e.g., the Ohio City neighbourhood in Cleveland, Ohio). As the popularity of craft beer grows, a new phenomenon, beer tourism, has emerged. Beer tourism involves visiting breweries, beer festivals, and beer museums. As beer tourism increases in popularity, more places have developed strategies to market their breweries, beer festivals, and beer museums with the goal of attracting more beer tourists. At both the city and regional scales, for example, Ale-trails have developed to promote breweries, not as stand-alone businesses, but as a network of breweries that beer tourists can visit over the period of an afternoon, evening, or weekend. Beer festivals are also an increasingly popular way to attract beer tourists to a region. Beer festivals last anywhere between two to three hours to two to three days.
Examples include The Great American Beer Festival in Denver, Colorado, USA, Joburg Fest in Johannesburg, South Africa, and the Birmingham Beer Bash in Birmingham, UK. Some festivals, such as the Alogastronomia Festival in Apecchio, Italy include locally produced beer as an integral part of a broader festival that displays and promotes local food.

In focusing on relevant case studies we are able to shed light on “The Geography of craft beer brewing and consumption: local entrepreneurialism and tourism development”, representative topics shall include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Craft beer tourism: issues, assets and future perspectives
- Craft beer tourism: local entrepreneurialism, branding and sense of place
- Craft beer tourism and brewery districts: a path for urban/rural regeneration?
- Craft beer tourists: consumption habits, attitudes, impact and motivations

Passing of Waldo Tobler

It was with great sadness that the Regional Science community learned of the passing of Waldo Tobler.

Waldo R. Tobler, professor emeritus of Geography, famed cartographer and founder of the first law of geography, passed away on February 20, 2018 at the age of eighty-eight.

Waldo received his Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Washington in 1961. After graduating, he spent sixteen years at the University of Michigan. His service at UC Santa Barbara began in 1977 where he held the positions of Professor of Geography and Professor of Statistics until his retirement. He taught a range of courses, including the History of Cartography, Geographic Transformations, and Migration. Waldo was an active Professor Emeritus at UCSB until his death, and the Geography department and university benefited greatly from his decades of involvement.

Stuart Sweeney, Professor and Department Chair shares some of his fondest memories. “Waldo was always kind and generous with his time in all his interactions. He remained keenly interested in the department and frequently came to campus on Thursdays to attend Colloquium. At the conclusion of many student presentations, and sometimes job candidate talks, he would ask, ‘How will you know when you are finished?’ Which was his whimsical way of noting that the problem you were working on was ill-defined. In looking back at some of his articles, it’s his conversational tone and occasional whimsical insights that I so enjoyed,” said Sweeney. “In his classic 1970 article where he offhandedly penned the first law of geography, in defending the parsimony of his model of urban population growth, he noted: ‘The model I describe, for example, recognizes that people die, are born, and migrate. It does not explain why people die, are born, and migrate. Some would insist that I should incorporate more behavioral notions, but then it would be necessary to discuss the psychology of urban growth; to do this properly requires a treatise on the biochemistry of perception, which in turn requires discussion of the physics of ion interchange, and so on’ (1970, pp. 234).” The first law of geography is succinctly stated as: “everything is related to everything else, but near things are more related than distant things.” Waldo invoked that law in modeling the growth of an urban region over time based upon relationships with nearby towns.  In a 2004 retrospective on his first law, after responding to comments by several prominent geographers who had taken up discussion, he concluded by saying: “I did not expect such a discussion when I wrote that paper in 1970. I was just having fun doing an animation in order to bring time into geography more explicitly” (2004, pp. 308).

Waldo was the recipient of many well deserved honors including: Member of the National Academy of Sciences, Honorary Fellow of the American Geographical Society, Osborn Maitland Miller Medal of the American Geographical Society (Outstanding contributions in Cartography or Geodesy), Meritorious Contributor Medallion of the Association of American Geographers, ESRI Lifetime Achievement in GIS Award, among others. “We will certainly miss his weekly visits, his keen insights, and our conversations,” shared Sweeney. Waldo was a great friend and colleague to many of us and he will be greatly missed.

A memorial gathering and reception is scheduled for May 25th, 2018 at 3pm in the Mosher Alumni House.
