Tenure-Track Positions in Urban and Regional Planning

The Graduate Program in Urban and Regional Planning at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology (IIT) is seeking to expand its program with a tenure-track faculty position. The position is open-rank – both junior and senior academics may apply. The appointment can start in October 1, 2016 or later. Salary and compensation are compatible with Israeli university standards.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have demonstrated exemplary scholarship and teaching in his/her field (as compatible with his or her academic rank). Applicants must hold a
Ph.D. degree in economics, urban planning or in a related field with an academic background and focus on economics.
We are especially interested in candidates specializing in:
- Urban and regional economics
- Housing and real estate economics
- Spatial statistics, spatio-temporal and data-driven analyses of decision making in spatial planning
Successful candidates will be expected to teach graduate-level economics courses for planners, supervise Master’s theses and Ph.D. dissertations, conduct cutting-edge research, and participate in Faculty (school) and university-wide activities. The rank will be determined in accordance with the candidate's record and accomplishments.
Prior knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary and teaching may be conducted in English.
About the Technion and the Graduate Program in Urban and Regional Planning The Technion is the leading university of science and technology in Israel and is
regarded among the top institutions of its kind worldwide. In the past decade, three of its faculty members won two Nobel prizes. The Graduate Program in Urban and
Regional Planning (within the Faculty of Architecture and Town Planning) was founded in 1969. It is the only planning program in Israel offering a Master’s and PhD planning
degrees accredited by the Council for Higher Education. The Program was the first program to join the American Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP) as a
corresponding member, and the first non-European program to join the Association of European Schools of Planning (AESOP). Currently there are 140 M.Sc students and 30
Ph.D. students at the program.

The Technion is located in Haifa in the green Mount Carmel area in the northern part of Israel with breathtaking views. The city offers excellent housing, education and
other public services and high quality of life. The City is the locus home of much of Israel’s renowned high tech industry.

Senator George J. Mitchell Center for Sustainability Solutions
and the New England Sustainability Consortium

The New England Sustainability Consortium (www.newenglandsustainabilityconsortium.org) has launched a new stakeholder-engaged, solutions-focused, interdisciplinary research program focused on the future of dams. Our research draws upon world-class faculty expertise at UNH, UMaine, URI, Keene State, USM and RISD and builds on NEST’s experience in advancing the theory and practice of sustainability science. Using dams in New England as a model system, the team will examine the economic, technological, ecological, social, and political trade-offs associated with different kinds of dam decisions. The team’s approach to problem solving is strongly dependent upon, and benefits from, the local knowledge and know-how of diverse stakeholders representing government, the private sector, and non-governmental organizations.

The Senator George J. Mitchell Center (umaine.edu/mitchellcenter/) at UMaine is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate with a deep commitment to stakeholder engaged, solutions-focused, interdisciplinary research to join the Maine team. The position may begin as early as Jan. 1, 2016.

Qualifications: Regardless of whether their primary training is in the natural sciences, social sciences, engineering or some combination, interested candidates should demonstrate a strong commitment to solve pressing problems using innovative methods (qualitative quantitative, interdisciplinary and/or engaged). Further, we seek a systems thinker who has experience with some form of collaborative modeling (participatory modeling or mapping, Bayesian techniques, etc.) and who demonstrates a willingness to learn outside of their primary research area. Candidates must also demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies. A Ph.D. is required by time of appointment.

Responsibilities: The responsibilities of thepostdoctoral researcher include: engaging with both the research team and diverse stakeholders to align research with societal concerns and needs; assuming broad research responsibilities; participating in ongoing team research and project-wide research activities; preparing manuscripts for publication; presenting research findings at public and professional meetings; contributing to the development and implementation of curricula and mentoring programs for students; mentoring graduate and undergraduate students; maintaining accurate records of research findings and the analysis of results.

This series contains scientific studies focusing on spatial phenomena, utilising theoretical frameworks, analytical methods, and empirical procedures specifically designed for spatial analysis. Advances in Spatial Science brings together innovative spatial research utilising concepts, perspectives, and methods relevant to both basic science and policy making. The Department of Geography and Earth Sciences and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte invite applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Geography in Economic Geography with a specialization in Globalization. We seek a dynamic scholar with research and teaching interests in global dimensions of the new economy and its embeddedness in metropolitan contexts who will complement the department’s strengths in urban and economic geography, support the College’s initiative on Globalization, and interact broadly with scholars within the Department and across the University. We welcome candidates whose experience in teaching, research, and community service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence. The position will begin August 15, 2016.
Required Qualifications: (1) a Ph.D. in geography or related field at the time of appointment; (2) demonstrated excellence in scholarship; (3) expertise in Geographic Information Science, spatial data analytics and/or spatial modeling; (4) prior success in obtaining, or the demonstrated potential to obtain, external funding; (5) effective communication skills; (6) a commitment to excellence in undergraduate and graduate education.
Desired Qualifications include: (1) evidence based scholarship on global processes in urban settings; (2) ability to teach in a diverse classroom setting; and (3) an understanding of the
funding landscape of their disciplinary field and of interdisciplinary initiatives.
Applicants should explain how their research can be generalized across multiple geographic regions and demonstrate their potential to contribute to Project Mosaic, an initiative to enhance interdisciplinary social and behavioral science analytics across the University.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain a robust and sustainable externally funded research program and to teach courses in economic geography at the M. A. and Ph.D. levels, as well as appropriate undergraduate courses as needed. The successful applicant is expected to actively engage in the academic community of the Department of
Geography and Earth Sciences, demonstrate leadership through advising and mentoring  students, and contribute service at the Departmental, College, University, community and

professional levels.
The Department of Geography and Earth Sciences is a diverse community of social and  physical scientists comprised of over 30 faculty members and more than 100 graduate students

Within the last ten years, the UM China Data Center has made lots of efforts in the development and distribution of government statistics, Census data, and GIS data of China. Those information provide a rich source for the study of population, economy, social environment and their relative changes in China. It has been a challenge how to efficiently integrate those space-time data, provide methodology for different research targets, and promote their applications in different fields. The workshop will introduce the China Geo-Explorer distributed by the University of Michigan China Data Center. It will demonstrate how space-time data of different formats and sources can be integrated, visualized, analyzed and reported in a web based system. The workshop is free and open for public. For those who are interested in China studies, China Geo-Explorer offers a web-based spatial data service that provides easy access to a rich collection of unique, authoritative, and comprehensive information from government statistics, population and economic censuses, and many other data sources in a spatially integrated system with many powerful functions for exploratory spatial data analysis. Unlike many other GIS systems and mapping tools, China Geo-Explorer is compatible with most web browsers and doesn’t require advanced GIS skills.
