Call for Workshop Proposals

---------------------------------------------

November 2, 2010

San Jose, CA, USA

The ACM SIGSPATIAL International Conference on Advances in Geographic Information Systems (ACM SIGSPATIAL GIS) traditionally holds one day co-located workshops on the day immediately preceding the first day of the conference. ACM SIGSPATIAL GIS 2010 aims to continue this practice and invites proposals for workshops to be submitted in pdf format to the Workshop Chair, Markus Schneider ( This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ), by May 15, 2010.

The duration of a workshop is one day. Workshops will take place on November 2, 2010, at the location of the conference.

The proceedings of the workshops are expected to be published jointly with the conference proceedings and will appear in the ACM Digital Library.

Workshops will benefit from the registration process of ACM SIGSPATIAL GIS 2010. All workshops will have a common continental breakfast and common morning and afternoon coffee breaks. The workshops focus on particular aspects of our field and are intended to enhance the conference experience for those attending the ACM SIGSPATIAL GIS conference. Thus, all workshop attendees must also register for the main ACM SIGSPATIAL GIS conference. The ACM SIGSPATIAL GIS conference sets the registration fees for the workshops which are the same for each workshop and are set at a minimum level to recover costs of room rental, refreshments, and AV.

No complimentary registration is provided to workshop organizers. If workshop organizers wish to have invited speakers, any additional financial support must come from funds that are raised by the workshop organizers.

One author per accepted workshop contribution (paper, poster, demo) is required to register for the workshop and the conference as well as attend the workshop to present the accepted submission. Otherwise, the accepted submission will appear neither in the published workshop proceedings nor in the ACM Digital Library version of the workshop proceedings.

Each workshop proposal must contain all pertinent information, including the following:

* workshop title

* short description of the topic and the format of the workshop

* explanation of why the proposed workshop is a good match with

ACM SIGSPATIAL GIS 2010

* names and contact information of the workshop organizer(s)

* names of the members of the program committee (at least 50% must

be already known and confirmed at the time of the proposal)

* proposal for important dates (paper submission deadline,

notification deadline, etc.)

* expected number of participants

* in case of previous instances of the workshop, the historical

numbers of participants

* in case of previous instances of the workshop, the historical

submission and acceptance counts

The decision about acceptance/rejection of workshop proposals will be made by the Workshop Chair in consultation with the SIGSPATIAL Executive Committee and the General Chairs, taking into account venue capacity as well as viability.

Evaluation criteria include overall quality and the fit with respect to the expected ACM SIGSPATIAL GIS 2010 program. Note that proposals are especially encouraged on emerging topics that are relevant to spatial information systems and algorithms (including location-based services and geographic information systems). Notification will be given by June 15, 2010.

The organizers of successful workshops will be responsible for their own review process. Publicity will be handled jointly with the workshop organizers being responsible for the creation of a workshop website. The local arrangements chairs may require that all workshops adhere to a specific general timetable to facilitate catering.

Workshop organizers must inform the Workshop Chair of the numbers of submissions and acceptances as soon as these numbers become available. Workshops with fewer than 20 expected registrants may be canceled at the discretion of the conference organizers.

Second ACM SIGSPATIAL International Workshop on Indoor Spatial Awareness (ISA 2010)

http://www.geom.unimelb.edu.au/winter/isa.html

In conjunction with ACM SIGSPATIAL GIS 2010

http://acmgis2010.cs.ucsb.edu/

With the rapid progress of location based services, geographic information systems, and ubiquitous computing technologies, the space that we are dealing with is no longer limited to outdoor space but being extended to indoor space. Indoor space has some differences from outdoor space, most notably by its relevant third dimension, but also by its privately regulated accessibility. Therefore to provide integrated seamless services across spaces it is required to establish new theories, data models, and systems. For this reason, research has begun to extend the scope of LBS and GIS to indoor space for the applications such as indoor orientation and navigation services, emergency management, indoor space management and 3D cadastre. This workshop is intended to bring together researchers, developers, and practitioners carrying out research and development related to the topic of indoor spatial awareness and to provide a forum for interdisciplinary discussions in all aspects of in!

door spatial awareness.

The topics of workshop include (but are not limited to) the following topics:

* indoor spatial data models

* handling moving objects in indoor space

* positioning, tracking and navigation in indoor space

* indexing and query processing of indoor spatial databases

* construction of indoor spatial databases

* context-awareness in indoor space

* indoor space analysis

* ontology for indoor space

* interoperability and standards

* applications and services for indoor space

Information for authors

The workshop solicits regular papers and work-in-progress papers. Submissions must be original and must not be under consideration for publication in any other forum. Papers must be formatted using the ACM camera-ready templates available at http://www.acm.org/sigs/pubs/proceed/template.html, and are limited to 8 and 4 pages, respectively. They must be submitted in PDF format via the EasyChair system, at http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=isa20100.

Acceptance will be based on relevance to the workshop and technical quality, originality, and potential impact, as well as clarity of presentation. All submitted papers will be assigned to at least 3 referees.

The workshop also solicits demo papers that describe demonstrations of prototype systems of relevance to the workshop. Such papers must be formatted and submitted as described above, but are limited to 2 pages. In addition to  relevance to the workshop, acceptance will be based on perceived interest to the workshop participants and the value of the demonstration.

Authors of accepted full and work-in-progress papers will be given the opportunity to also demonstrate prototype systems at the workshop and thus do not need to also submit corresponding demo papers.

The proceedings of the workshops will be published jointly with the conference proceedings and will appear in the ACM Digital Library. One author per accepted workshop contribution is required to register for the workshop and the conference, as well as attend the workshop to present the accepted submission. Otherwise, the accepted submission will not appear in the workshop proceedings.

Session Reviewers: Scientific Committee, Session Organizer(s) and external experts

icon ecQTG2011_health geography_special session (538.68 kB)

Session Abstract: It is known that the health of people is heavily influenced by their surrounding environment. Therefore, research in the area of health geography is a broad and fast growing research discipline addressing topics such as the spread of diseases, health facility planning, adequate allocation of resources, tackling health inequalities and how the environment may influence people’s health. There are different ways on how to approach health geography research and one is to use quantitative methods, which are highly supportive in this research area.

Hence, this session seeks abstracts in the area of health/medical geography with the focus on quantitative methods. Attention should be given to the development of new methods in the area of health geography and also on various application areas where quantitative methods play a major role. Therefore, papers are invited but not limited to the following topics:

  • New developments in quantitative methods for health geographic research
  • Spatial modelling of access to and usage of health facilities
  • Spatial simulation of diseases and health risks
  • Privacy issues in quantitative health research

Please submit your abstract (up to a maximum of 1 page) to Dr Melanie Tomintz (via email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) by the 30th March 2011. Guidelines for abstract format can be found here.

Important deadlines:

  • Abstract submission: 30th March 2011
  • Abstract acceptance notification: 15th April 2011
  • Full Papers submission: 15th May 2011
