Globally, governments look at public private partnerships for investments, public service delivery and innovation in these times of shrinking government budgets. Partnerships between governments and private actors are even believed to be much needed instruments to face the grand societal challenges, like climate change, clean energy, smart and green transport, and secure societies. However, many existing PPP’s face hardship because of economic downturn. Moreover, because of increasingly risk-averse actors, securing commitment, finance and maximizing collaboration, innovation and value for money through PPP’s become enormous challenges. There is a pressing need for cross-disciplinary, cross-sectoral, cross-country analyses and solutions.

On 6 and 7 November 2013, in the frame of the EU-funded COST Action ‘P3T3 - PPP’s in transport-trends and theory’ (TU 1001), the Department of Transport and Regional Economics, the Research Unit on Public Administration & Management (Department of Political Sciences), the Law Faculty of the University of Antwerp and the Antwerp Management School will jointly host a two-day international conference on Public-Private Partnerships under the title ‘Global challenges in PPP : cross-sectoral and cross-disciplinary solutions?’. It will be held at the University of Antwerp, Belgium.

The preliminary conference program can be found here. Specific topics are dealing with all fields where PPP’s are or can be applied: transport infrastructure, energy, health care, education, sports facilities, urban renewal, environmental development etc.

Director, School of Geography and Development, University of Arizona

The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, University of Arizona, invites applications for the position of Director of the School of Geography and Development (SGD).  The search is to remain open until the position is filled, but we would encourage anyone interested in being considered to send in application materials before November 1.

The Director is expected to advance the School’s mission by attracting, mentoring, and retaining the highest quality faculty, expanding and broadening the School’s research activities and funding, maintaining innovative educational programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and fostering public engagement and outreach. The Chilean Society of Regional Science (SOCHER) informs that paper entitled:

Authored by Juan Pablo Rodríguez, Sofía García y Coro Chasco has obtained the Andy Isserman Prize in the 5th SOCHER Annual Meeting and the 3rd Regional Science Americas Meeting that was held place in the city of Arica, Arica y Parinacota Region, Chile; during September 26th, 27th and 28^th 2013.

The winners received a 700 dollars prize and a recognition diploma by the president of the selection committee.

10^th World Congress of the Regional Science Association International

CALL FOR WORKSHOPS AND TUTORIALS

In conjunction with the 2014 World Congress of the RSAI, one day of workshops and tutorials will be held on Monday, May 26^th.  It is anticipated that tutorials and workshops will be held on a university campus close to the main congress venue.

WORKSHOPS and TUTORIALS:

Workshops and tutorials are an innovative way of covering a single topic in detail, to cover a Regional Science topic in depth or introduce emerging research area, such as a method or technique of great value for regional Science research. A tutorial should last either a full (two sessions of three hours) or half (one session of three hours) day.  Tutorials may include activities or exercises for participants. 

Tutorial proposals should be less than 2000 words, and must address all of the following issues:

* Title of the tutorial

* Description of topics and relevance to the Regional Science community

* Tutorial organizer(s) and their qualifications

* Format of tutorial (1/2 day, 1 day)

* Tutorial outline, indicating overall learning objectives and individual course elements

* Intended audience (introductory, advanced) and any background knowledge or skills required

* Required materials (e.g. will you need internet access, lab access, specific software installed?)

* Expected number of participants
