The Department of Forestry and Natural Resources at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, is seeking applicants for an assistant professor of ecological economics and sustainability. This is a tenure-track, academic-year appointment with research, extension, and teaching responsibilities. 

RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate will be expected to develop an internationally recognized research and extension program in ecological or natural resource economics with a focus on sustainable forest ecosystems and associated environmental/ecosystem services.  Expected teaching responsibilities include an upper division undergraduate course in natural resource economics and an alternate year graduate course in the candidate’s area of expertise. 

Purdue University’s Department of Forestry and Natural Resources is a broad environmental department, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches across a spectrum of research areas including ecology, forest biology, wildlife, fisheries and aquatic sciences, wood science, genetics and human dimensions of natural resource management ( http://www.ag.purdue.edu/fnr/).  The department hosts the Hardwood Tree Improvement and Regeneration Center, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, state, and non-governmental groups. QUALIFICATIONS: A Ph.D. in ecological, environmental or natural resource economics, agricultural economics, or a closely related discipline. Undergraduate or graduate training in the field of natural resources is desired, but not mandatory.  Extension and/or teaching experience; the potential to develop a vigorous, extramurally funded research program; and a commitment to extension, research, and teaching are required.  A strong publication record and post-doctoral or professional experience are desirable.

Leon N. Moses, 1924 – 2013

Leon N. Moses, Professor Emeritus, Department of Economics, Northwestern University, died on October 12, 2013.

Professor Moses was the 15^th person to serve as President of the Regional Science Association, 1972-73. He came to Northwestern from Harvard in 1959, and retired in 2005. He was Department Chair, 1970-72, and Director of the Transportation Center, 1974 to 1979.

Dr. Ian Savage, Associate Department Chair of Economics and Distinguished Senior Lecturer, remarked: ‘Leon was a very colorful character, but also a generous and loyal person.’

Dr. Savage wrote a professional biography of Professor Moses for the Biographical Dictionary of American Economists, which described his substantial contributions to transportation, urban economics and regional science:

Project: The LUMECOS project aims to develop a spatial micro-econometric land-use change model for application in assessing the impact of ecosystem services relevant to the dissemination of micro-organisms, crop health and climate processes. The successful applicant will contribute both to the development of spatial econometric discrete estimators for multinomial discrete choices usable for large samples (static and dynamic cases), and to the development and implementation (using R software) of related tests of model specification and of predicting accuracy.  S/he will contribute to applied model specification based on annual spatial micro-data on land owners and farmers in Provence region (2000-2012).

Globally, governments look at public private partnerships for investments, public service delivery and innovation in these times of shrinking government budgets. Partnerships between governments and private actors are even believed to be much needed instruments to face the grand societal challenges, like climate change, clean energy, smart and green transport, and secure societies. However, many existing PPP’s face hardship because of economic downturn. Moreover, because of increasingly risk-averse actors, securing commitment, finance and maximizing collaboration, innovation and value for money through PPP’s become enormous challenges. There is a pressing need for cross-disciplinary, cross-sectoral, cross-country analyses and solutions.

On 6 and 7 November 2013, in the frame of the EU-funded COST Action ‘P3T3 - PPP’s in transport-trends and theory’ (TU 1001), the Department of Transport and Regional Economics, the Research Unit on Public Administration & Management (Department of Political Sciences), the Law Faculty of the University of Antwerp and the Antwerp Management School will jointly host a two-day international conference on Public-Private Partnerships under the title ‘Global challenges in PPP : cross-sectoral and cross-disciplinary solutions?’.
