We have the pleasure of inviting you to the 6th Slovak Winter Seminar of Regional Science that will take place in the mountain resort of Low Tatras on 9th – 12th March 2016.

Enclosed you can find more information about the conference.

The main objective of the annual Winter Seminar is to bring creative academic debate on actual issues of regional science and practice of regional policy by an attractive environment and relaxed atmosphere.

Accepted articles will be published in the conference proceedings "6th Slovak Winter Seminar of Regional Science 2016” with ISBN. Selected papers will be invited to publish in the peer reviewed journal Region Direct in 2016.

Award of Stan Czamanski Prize in 2015

In mid-October, 2015, our committee met by telephone to recommend the winner of the 2015 award of the Stan Czamanski Prize for the best Ph.D. dissertation proposal approved during the period July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015. The six candidates for this award were the following:

Sarah Howe, RMIT University, Victoria, Australia

Victor Iturra Rivera, The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, USA

Dávid Krisztián Nagy, PrincetonUniversity, Princeton, New Jersey, USA

Natalya Rybnikova, University of Haifa, Haifa, Israel

Samuel Stehle, PennStateUniversity, University Park, Pennsylvania, USA

One other candidate by Xize Wang, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California, USA, was submitted early for the 2016 competition. He was asked to resubmit his documents in June 2016. Finally, one additional candidate, Hyun Kim, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison, Wisconsin, USA, was submitted on September 30, 2015. This submission was not judged in the 2015 competition.

In reviewing the six submissions, the following statement was carefully considered:

“Professor Czamanski’s research exemplified the analysis of social problems with regional and spatial dimensions. In doing so, he chose judiciously the right combination of analytical and empirical research methods from his tool box to address the specific issue at hand. Many of his papers illustrated how particular combinations of methods could be used most aptly to study particular problems.”

In our review, we agreed unanimously that the proposal of Steven Gehrke best represented the approach of Professor Czamanski. Gehrke’s proposal was entitled “Active Travel Behavior and Spatial-temporalLand Use Mixing.” The letter by Professor Kelly Clifton was helpful in reaching this conclusion.

Well-being and economic growth are intertwined. Cities are the catalyst and engine of an innovation-based economy where new ideas represent the strategic input of production. It is no surprise that people tend to live in cities both in the developed and developing countries because this is where wealth is created, high quality services are available and life quality is comparatively higher with respect to other parts of the country.  While this is true, one has also to acknowledge the negative impacts such a concentration produces in terms of congestion, accidents, polluting emissions and so on. To be attractive cities need to be well functioning and thus an adequate in flow of goods, intermediate and final, and outflow of exports and waste has to be guaranteed so much that modern lifestyle is heavily reliant on well-functioning supply chains and freight transportation systems. 

Urbanisation is becoming more and more the manifestation of economic growth with rising percentages of city dwellers with respect to others living elsewhere. 

Modern urban policies are trying to foster the implementation of a mobility paradigm prioritising non-motorised modes, public transport use and the regeneration of urban space. While these actions seem, prima facie, appropriate to increase city liveability, at the same time, the lack of integrated, passenger and freight, policies is evident. This makes even more strident the problems arising from the single level of intervention perspective often adopted by policy makers. When adopting a mid- to long-term view on urban freight distribution issues one cannot avoid acknowledging the strong impact city planning plays. Under this respect one could use, as a mere explanatory example, the discussion pertaining to the integration of warehousing and logistics activities into local and regional policies making and planning processes.

Scope of the Special Issue

This Special Issue will foster the understanding of the role alternative planning approaches, sustainability perspectives and various priorities have in determining the type of policies implemented, the way they are discussed among the interested stakeholders and how they are likely to be accepted and impact on behaviour change. 

This will be performed both by illustrating methodological innovations as well as presenting relevant case studies. Possible topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

1) Sustainable Urban Logistics Plans

2) Urban freight transportation planning and rational decision-making processes 

1) Planning practices and freight transport infrastructure and logistics sprawl

2) Project financing initiatives and infrastructure funding

3) Freight Planning and major urban infrastructure projects

4) Public space and land use planning 

5) Freight demand uncertainty and planning

6) Logistic platforms and facility location planning

7) Integrated passenger and freight planning

8) Technology and business models

We announce the first Call for Sessions and abstracts for the EUROGEO 2016 Conference, which will take place 29-30 September 2016 in Malaga, Spain. EUROGEO 2016 will focus on the transformative nature of geographic information, the ways geographers are thinking spatially about people, environments, and the relationships between them and how they can contribute to the achievement of a better world.
The theme of the conference is "Geographic Information: for a better world". Geographic Information: for a better world will provide opportunities to demonstrate the dynamic nature of geographical research of changing natural and social settings, studying the world, its landscapes, places, people and their relationships with the environment.
