Call for papers for a Special Session on "Spatial Econometrics" at the 62nd Annual North American Meeting of the North American Regional Science Association International, Portland, OR, November 11-14, 2015.

With the increased collection and the diffusion of geo-located spatial data, spatial econometrics has become a pervasive topic in many disciplines. This special session aims at bringing together researchers participating at the NARSC meeting with different substantive research focuses, but that share a common interest in spatial econometric methods and applications. Both theoretical and applied papers will find place in this special session.

If you are interested to contribute with a paper to this Special Session, please follow the usual abstract submission procedure at http://www.narsc.org/newsite/conference/online-abstractsession-submission/ and then send the ID of the submitted paper to: This email address is being protected from spambots. Special Issue of Socio-Economic Planning Sciences
Digital Support Tools for Smart Cities
Guest Editors: Peter Nijkamp, VU University Amsterdam / Mickiewicz University, Poznan, Poland
Karima Kourtit, KTH Royal Institute of Technology/ Mickiewicz University, Poznan, Poland
Roger Stough, George Mason University
Socio-Economic Planning Sciences (SEPS) will publish a special issue focusing on smart cities. In recent years we have witnessed a wealth of new digital information technologies that are not only supporting tools for achieving smart cities, but also evolving into independent information systems shaping the future of metropolitan areas. Modern cities tend to become a ‘constellation of computers’, with innovative ‘control and command’ tools.
Novel applications in the public sector – in support of smart cities – can be found inter alia in infrastructure planning, facilities planning, intelligent transportation systems and e-democracy initiatives. The use of cyber data in the private sector is also drastically increasing, e.g., in the field of logistics or e-tourism. And finally, households appear to be the new users of digital information, e.g., entertainment decisions (through Twitter or Facebook), teleshopping. These developments support the hypothesis that the future of cities will largely be determined by cyber space applications. And therefore, a key question this special issue aims to answer is: what is the role of digital technologies in developing smart cities?
The special issue of SEPS on Digital Support Tools for Smart Cities aims to bring together a collection of high-quality contributions on the potential and use of digital information technology for smart cities. In this context, papers exploring the opportunities provided by ‘big data’ and data mining techniques are also welcome. In addition to intra-metropolitan studies, we also encourage the submission of papers analyzing the digital connectivity linkages between cities. The emphasis of all selected papers will be on applied quantitative studies that are potentially helpful in tackling public sector decision-making problems.
All manuscripts should be submitted electronically via the Elsevier Editorial System (EES) http://ees.elsevier.com/seps. Please select Smart Cities as the Article Type to make sure that your paper will be considered for the special issue. The submission deadline is October 26, 2015. The plan is to publish the special issue in late 2016. Contact the managing guest editor Karima Kourtit at This email address is being protected from spambots. As of academic year 2015-2016, the University of Antwerp will be offering two unique advanced Masters in transport economics: a management-oriented Master with specialisations in maritime and air transport economics, and a research training programme. Both Master programmes will be taught in English and will be coordinated by C-MAT, the Centre for Maritime and Air Transport Management. C-MAT is part of the Faculty of Applied Economics and is managed by the Department of Transport and Regional Economics (TPR)of the University of Antwerp.

NEW: A limited number of partial scholarships awarded by the Flemish Government is available for C-MAT students for the academic year 2015-2016! Please indicate your interest in the scholarships when filling out the C-MAT application form via www.c-mat.be.

From 31 August - 4 September 2015, the Antwerp Urban Studies Institute, to which TPR contributes, will be hosting its third summer school: CityLAB III: The Productive City.

This one-week intensive course aims to discuss the productive role of cities from an interdisciplinary perspective. We set out to analyze how and why urban material production disappeared and what the consequences are. Subsequently, we will examine and discuss if material production should keep its place in the city. Inevitably, new forms of sustainable production, such as urban food production, urban small industrial production, and urban craftsmanship will be addressed. In addition, we will examine and discuss new ideas about the relationship between working and living and modes of transport, and related concepts and practices of urban planning.

The final program and more information can be found on the course website.

Model choice and size distribution: a Bayequentist approach
John-Oliver Engler, Stefan Baumgärtner
We propose a new three-step model-selection framework for size distributions in empirical data. It generalizes a recent frequentist plausibility-of-fit analysis (Step 1) and combines it with a relative ranking based on the Bayesian Akaike Information Criterion (Step 2). We enhance these statistical criteria with the additional criterion of microfoundation (Step 3) which is to select the size distribution that comes with a dynamic micro model of size dynamics  > more

A systematic approach for assessing spatially and temporally differentiated opportunity costs of biodiversity conservation measures in grasslands
Melanie Mewes, Martin Drechsler, Karin Johst, Astrid Sturm, Frank Wätzold
Several billion euros are spent in Europe every year on agri-environment schemes to compensate farmers for (costly) conservation measures such as specific mowing and grazing regimes. These measures can impact grassland species during their reproductive period. Therefore, it is particularly important when (and not only where) they are applied. However, in contrast to the spatial allocation of measures, their temporal allocation has rarely been taken into consideration > more

Macro-economic Impact Assessment of Future Changes in European Marine Ecosystem Services
Francesco Bosello, Elisa Delpiazzo, Fabio Eboli
The present research has been developed within the EU FP7 VECTORS project. whose main scope has been to evaluate, from a multilateral perspective, drivers, pressures and vectors of changes in marine life of three main European seas (Baltic, Western Mediterranean, North), the mechanisms by which they do so and the impacts that they have on ecosystem structures and functioning as well as on economic activities and wellbeing. This paper describes the methodology, data elaboration and main results of a modelling exercise aiming to assess the economic effect of future changes in the EU marine ecosystem in the medium term (2030) > more
