Post-doctoral Researcher in Space, Health and Population Economics, Purdue University, Department of Agricultural Economics

We seek a post-doctoral fellow with talents and expertise in one or more of the following areas: regional and urban economics, population and labor market economics, spatial and space-time modeling, (spatial) econometrics, and regional development. Preferably, the ideal candidate has experience in programming and using advanced statistical software packages as well as utilizing geographic information systems. This position is intended to strengthen the research program conducted in the Space, Health and Population Economics (SHaPE) research group under the direction of Dr. Raymond Florax, in close partnership with the Purdue Center for Regional Development (PCRD), other existing research clusters at Purdue University, and the Economic Research Service of the United States Department of Agriculture (ERS/USDA).

Qualified candidates will hold a doctoral degree (in economics, geography, or a related discipline) and possess an interdisciplinary background in the understanding of economic and social dimensions of urbanization and regional policy modeling. The candidate is expected to work on a project focusing on intergenerational transfer of poverty in the United States. Strong analytical and (spatial) modeling capabilities are expected as well as good writing skills.

Evidence of strong publication potential and ability to assist with generating external funding is essential.

Salary and Benefits: $40,000-45,000 per year plus benefits, depending on qualifications. The position will be based in the Department of Agricultural Economics with an appointment for one full year, potentially renewable depending on performance and funding.

Post-Doctoral Fellowship at GATE Lyon Saint-Etienne (2 years)

The GATE Lyon Saint-Etienne is inviting applications for a two-year postdoctoral fellowship within the project “Migration and the Reshaping of Consumption Patterns” (MARCO_P) funded by the ORA-China Program of the Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR France), Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG Germany), the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC UK), and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC China).

The MARCO_P project is coordinated by Corrado Giulietti (IZA), Jackline Wahba (University of Southampton), Li Shi (Beijing Normal University), Du Yang (Chinese Academy of Social Sciences) and Sylvie Démurger (GATE Lyon Saint-Etienne). The ANR funded position will be attached to the GATE Lyon Saint-Etienne in Ecully (France).

Profile

Candidates must have obtained their PhD, preferably in applied microeconomics when taking up the position in September 2015. They should demonstrate a solid background in microeconometrics and a strong interest in the economics of migration and the economics of inequality. Some working knowledge of the economy of China will be appreciated, but is not required. The working language is English.

Terms and conditions of the position

The employment contract will be for two years beginning in September 2015. The position is residential and the selected candidate is required to live in Lyon.

The selected candidate will be required to devote his/her time to the main research activities of the project on the impact of internal migration in China on consumption patterns and preferences.

NARSC Graduate Student Paper Competition

The North American Regional Science Council (NARSC) Graduate Student Paper Award contest is held annually in conjunction with the North American Meetings of the Regional Science Association International (RSAI). This contest encourages the participation of young scholars by providing a forum for paper presentation and discussion by senior scholars in the field of regional science. Two prizes are awarded:
  
1) Graduate-Student-Author Paper Competition: Eligibility for the award is limited to current Masters and PhD students, and/or recent graduates who completed their degrees after September 1, 2015. Co-authored papers are acceptable; however, all authors listed on a paper must meet the eligibility criteria above.

2) Graduate-Student-Led Paper Competition: Eligibility for the award requires that the paper’s “primary author” be a current Masters or PhD student, or a recent graduate who completed his/her degree within twelve months preceding the submission date.
 
Papers with senior co-authors are acceptable; however, most of the substantive work and contribution of the paper must be directly attributable to an author who meets the eligibility criteria above.

The 2015 contest will be held in conjunction with the annual North American Meetings of the Regional Science Association International, to be held in Washington, DC. Individuals should submit a digital copy of their paper, along with a cover letter from their academic advisor. For the Graduate-Student-Led Paper Competition, the cover letter should state the approximate percentages of the substantive work (ideas, methods, and applications) and contribution that are directly attributable to the primary author (a student or recent graduate). The paper must be presented at the conference by a student author.

Papers should be formatted consistent with Papers in Regional Science guidelines. The deadline for submission of the complete paper is September 1, 2015, with papers reviewed by a panel of judges prior to the NARSC annual conference. The winners will be announced during the awards luncheon at the NARSC Conference. All authors who are selected as finalists will receive a cash prize. In-kind prizes may also be awarded. The prize-winning papers will also be considered for publication in Papers in Regional Science. Because the papers will be subject to standard review procedures, publication is not guaranteed.

Those who wish to submit a paper to the NARSC Graduate Student Paper Award contest can indicate this when submitting the abstract (by July 1, 2015) by ticking the relevant box on the abstract submission page. The full paper must be submitted in electronic form by September 1, 2015. Details on where to submit your paper will be forthcoming.

2) CALL FOR WORKSHOPS AND TUTORIALS

The Local Organizing Committee of the 2015 NARSC Conference in Portland  invites proposals for half-day and full day Workshops and Tutorials. The deadline for proposals is June 5, 2015. Please see guidelines below:


62nd Annual North American Meetings of the Regional Science Association International, Portland, Oregon November 11-14, 2015
In conjunction with the 2015 NARSC meetings, one day of workshops and tutorials will be held on Wednesday, November 11th.

WORKSHOPS:
Workshops should provide a platform for presenting and discussing ideas in a less-formal and more open way than is possible in a conference setting. Thus, they should provide an excellent opportunity for researchers to present work in progress and obtain detailed feedback, and should have ample time allocated for discussion and participation by all attendees. Workshops are welcome in all topics of interest to NARSC attendees, with the proviso that new and emerging areas of research are especially welcome.

Workshop proposals should be less than 1,500 words, and must include the following:
* Title of the workshop
* Description of topics to be covered
* Scope and novelty of the workshop
* Workshop organizer(s) and their qualifications
* Format of workshop (1/2 day, 1 day)
* Highlights (e.g. keynotes, panels, other modes of discussion)
* Expected number of participants
* Details of any previous related workshops

TUTORIALS:
Tutorials are an innovative way of covering a single topic in detail, to cover a Regional Science topic in depth or introduce emerging research area. A tutorial should last either a full (two sessions of three hours) or half (one session of three hours) day.  Tutorials may include activities or exercises for participants.
Tutorial proposals should be less than 1,500 words, and must address all of the following issues:
* Title of the tutorial
* Description of topics and relevance to NARSC community
* Tutorial organizer(s) and their qualifications
* Format of tutorial (1/2 day, 1 day)
* Tutorial outline, indicating overall learning objectives and individual course elements
* Intended audience (introductory, advanced) and any background knowledge or skills required
* Required materials (e.g. will you need internet access, lab access, specific software installed?)
* Expected number of participants

SUBMISSION:

All proposals will be reviewed by the organizing committee. Successful proposals will be notified by June 12, 2015. The special sessions on various aspects of GeoComputation are planned for the North American Meetings of the Regional Science Association International (NARSC) to be held in Portland, Oregon, USA, November 11-14, 2015. Suitable topics for the session presentations are theoretical, methodological and applied issues related to GeoComputation - spatial analysis and modeling, and in the context of regional science.
