The paper submission deadline for our 55th annual meeting on the Big Island of Hawaii, February 14-17, 2016, is extended to November 16, 2015. That day will be our hard deadline for papers, to allow time for manuscript review and preliminary program preparation. If your paper is ready to submit, please do go ahead and upload it. However, for those in need of the extra time to get their papers polished (or completed), we’re happy to be able to offer a few weeks of extra breathing room.
With regard to travel arrangements for the meeting, keep in mind that Hawaii in the winter is attractive to more than just regional scientists! Those booking on the earlier side will likely find better airfares and will have a greater choice of room types from our negotiated room block (this is especially true for those extending their stays beyond the dates of the meeting). See Hotel Information for room reservation instructions.

Dear Colleagues,
We have already begun receiving draft contributions, and we hope to be seeing your rough draft during the next two months, and of course, sooner is better than later!
One thing to note is that the Springer contract requires a final manuscript submission at the end of May 2016. This is consistent with the initial draft submission deadlines, but makes it imperative that authors meet the target dates. In this regard, we will be sending out this week a more explicit timeline.
WRSA and SRSA Opportunities
Some have suggested that although it was too late for NARSC, it would be possible to consider one or more special sessions devoted to the book contributions at both WRSA and SRSA. As Bruce Newbold suggested, these sessions might organized differently from regular sessions, either shorter presentations, panel, or discussion sessions, and "might highlight authors and build ‘buzz’ and discussion about the book. It might also be useful for other contributors to see what others are doing, which could help to tie the various contributions together.” I think this is a terrific idea, so if you would be interested in participating in such sessions at either meeting, would you please email me to let me know? If there are sufficient numbers, I’ll happily organize sessions at one or both meetings — so be sure to let me know which meeting! As a reminder, here are the details on the two meetings:
WRSA: 55th annual meeting on the Big Island of Hawaii, February 14-17, 2016, submission deadline is November 16, 2015.
SRSA: The 55th annual meetings of the SRSA will be held in Arlington, Virginia, USA, March 31- April 2, 2016. First call for papers just issued.
{As an aside, note that the SRSA has a new email distribution list. Sign up here if interested.}
Again, we are looking forward very efficient process so that the book will be in print at the earliest possible date. As a reminder, here is our planned schedule - note that the editorial process began in October!
June – October, 2015 Solicit contributions
October 2015 –February 2016 Edit contributions
Obtain copyright releases
February – March, 2016 Contributors revise manuscripts
April Final proofreading
May 15 Submit manuscript to publisher
May – July, 2016 Final corrections and revisions
August-September 2016 Book goes in production
In the Springer guidelines attached to this email, you will find templates for the preparation of manuscripts in Word and in TeX which can be used by the authors for preparing their contributions. Attached, I am sending you as well Springer’s short manuscript submission information sheet which summarizes the main important information.
Springer also provides manuscript templates in both Word and LaTex. While it is not strictly mandatory, we strongly encourage you to use these, as this will give the resulting volume the greatest possible degree of consistency from chapter to chapter. I also encourage you to please have a look at Springer’s manuscript guidelines for editors/authors.
We are looking forward to receiving your contributions!
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

Freight transport systems are fundamental to guarantee urban sustainable development. In fact, their role is essential in harmonising economic growth while minimising territorial externalities so to attain a high level of life quality within cities. Territorial and economic planning coupled with effective management of freight distribution activities are necessary to foster the well-functioning of economic and social networks. City liveability is promoted by competitive transport costs, high logistics service levels, quite, clean, culturally rich, attractive and safe environment for city dwellers.
Improving city logistics performance and city quality of life depend on different interconnected factors. Modelling, planning and evaluating urban freight distribution policies are crucial activities to foster innovation and behaviour change. Under this respect it is appropriate to acknowledge that the same policy can be interpreted and evaluated from different perspectives. Taking a stakeholder-specific perspective is fundamental in determining urban freight distribution policy effects. Retailers, transport providers, local administration and citizen are commonly considered the four main macro-categories whose interests and behaviour should be investigated. This Special issue aims at providing all the necessary instruments to understand the background, objectives, methodologies and possible governance systems to deal with urban freight distribution from a stakeholders’ perspective.
The European White Paper on Transport underlines the relevance transport in urban areas plays and illustrates goals of carbon free city logistics by 2030, which are not seemingly achievable by employing the regulatory approach adopted so far. Various forms of public-private partnerships will have to be developed, adopted, implemented and managed. Stakeholders’ interactions while acknowledged as important and deep-rooted in this context are not sufficiently studied yet. Long-term relationships are less explored with respect to short-term measures, reciprocal stakeholders’ knowledge, awareness and trust need to be built and sustained if positive interactions ought to emerge and produce the desired results.
The relevant aspects considered and investigated relates to stakeholders’ engagement (e.g. methods, frameworks and management agreements), perception (e.g. problems faced and possible policies to be enacted) and reactions (e.g. evaluation methods, distributional considerations, fairness perception, etc.). Descriptions of case studies are welcome since they provide a benchmark for best-case experiences throughout the world and offer an understanding of real applications. Success and/or failure elements are investigated to discover, from single cases, similarities and differences stimulating critical reflections and guidelines for action.
This Call for Papers is linked to the Urban Freight and Behaviour Change (URBE) Conference held in Rome, October 1st and 2nd 2015 (http://host.uniroma3.it/eventi/urbe/).
Scope of the Special Issue
It is anticipated that this Special Issue will advance the understanding of the role alternative stakeholders’ engagement, perception and reaction play in fostering the definition, implementation, management, evaluation and continuous improvement of long-term partnerships among different stakeholders in urban freight distribution systems and their role in determining the needed behaviour change.
The Special Issue will primarily, though not exclusively, focus on:

RSAN/SDIN workshop
autumn day/najaarsdag
“Knowledge Creation and Neighbourhoods”
keynote by: Prof. Dr. Oliver Ibert, Freie Universität Berlin
location: Deprez building, near Tilburg CS, Lange Nieuwstraat 172-174
start 10:00, finish 17:00

City neighbourhoods differ widely from one another, to the point where severe poverty and social deprivation may literally be just a few steps away from wealth and affluence, and where socio-culturally diverse cosmopolitan high grounds may neighbour inward-looking enclaves of ethnic minorities or lower working class white communities.
In general, cities seem to favour knowledge creation, because of their diversity of knowledge inputs, their diverse markets and outlets for new products and services, and their physical connectivity to global knowledge. However, knowledge creation only happens in a select number of privileged places within cities. This is because the knowledge workers involved in knowledge creation form distinct social and professional communities that occupy distinct physical places within the city. They work in universities, research centres and office buildings, they meet at airports, hotels and bars, they have a preference for high-end cultural and leisure amenities and they live in upscale residential areas. These are the physical places where knowledge creation happens.
This is sufficient reason to problemize the interaction between social space and physical place; the interaction between the professional communities and networks of knowledge workers and the physical places where they meet. The spatial scale on which knowledge creation happens may be smaller than the cities and regions of the “innovative milieu” and the regional innovation models. Clearly, with their diversity of neighbourhoods cities cannot be seen as integrated and coherent innovation systems. On the other hand, knowledge creation hot spots cannot exist without the less favoured neighbourhoods. To an important degree, that is where the “service workers” who “run” these hotspots, as cleaners, restaurant workers and security staff, live. This raises important questions regarding the interaction between social space and physical place for knowledge creation. What makes a place a knowledge creation hot spot? Can cities manipulate this? How are hot spots connected to global knowledge? But is also raises pressing questions on the relationship between knowledge creation hot spots and less favoured neighbourhoods. How do borders emerge between hot spots and the rest of the city? Can these borders be made more permeable? How much economic exchange (people’s jobs) exists between hot spots and less favoured neighbourhoods? What social and cultural functions do hots spots perform for the city in general?
It may be that, for knowledge creation, cities depend on a mosaic of attractive places within and beyond the city in order to attract knowledge workers. But at the same time, this trans-local mosaic must be integrated in a local web of economic and social city life if it is to remain vibrant.
