Dear WRSA Members and Friends,
It's already time to start planning for the next WRSA Annual Meeting--our 59th!
The 59th Annual Meeting of the WRSA will be held jointly with the 26th Pacific Conference (PRSCO) of the RSAI in Waikiki, Hawaii.
Our joint meeting will be held at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki, Hawaii, March 18-21. The meeting will open on Wednesday, March 18, with our traditional plenary and welcoming reception. Three full days of sessions follow. See the website or attached Call for Papers for additional meeting information.
To submit a paper for program consideration or to register for the meeting, go to www.wrsaonline.org and use the "Login/Register" link to access/create your account and upload your paper and pay your meeting fees. Reminder: You no longer email me your paper and NARSC no longer handles our payments!
The Spring/Summer 2019 Newsletter is also attached and contains everything you'll need to start planning for Hawaii. For those wanting the information now, here are the key details:
Paper Submission: Papers should be uploaded to the WRSA website by November 15, although as in past years the "deadline" will be extended until mid-December. Full papers (draft format acceptable) for WRSA participants as well as short abstracts for PRSCO participants will be accepted for this year's joint conference. Program review committee will review and invitations will be sent to the accepted papers of abstracts. Draft papers are sufficient for the November deadline, so long as we have a complete version in hand by the end of January 2020.
Hotel Reservations: Our negotiated room rate at the Hilton is $229/night (plus taxes). Full details and a reservation link are posted on our website (link here). The “OPTIONAL” resort charge of $20 per night will include basic guest internet access (up to 2 devices), Hawaiian cultural activities, and outdoor morning exercise classes. The hotel has agreed to honor our special room rate three days prior to and following our meeting (Mar 18th through Mar 21st), based on availability. Guest parking is available with the extra charges. Please note: after February 21, 2020, the hotel will no longer honor our special room rate! Be sure to book early!
Tiebout Prize: Advisors and PhD students alike are reminded that November 15 is the hard deadline for submissions for the 34th Annual Tiebout Prize in Regional Science. See attached flyer or the WRSA website for full details. Papers co-authored with faculty advisors are acceptable, however the primary author must meet the Tiebout student requirements and the bulk of the substantive work and contribution of the paper must have come from the student. REQUIRED: Submitted pdfs of the paper must include a letter from the faculty advisor confirming that these requirements have been met.
Student Conference Assistants: WRSA is seeking several students to assist with meeting registration in Pasadena. In exchange for 8-10 hours of volunteering at the registration desk, students will receive a complete rebate of their preregistration fees (worth $150, to be processed as a refund following the meeting) and potentailly discounted staff rooms at the conference hotel. Just drop us an email (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) to let us know your preferences and availability constraints.
Please feel free to contact me (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) with any questions.

Valued colleague, dear friend,
Due to the high number of petitions received, we have decided to extend the abstract submission deadline for the XLV Reunió d'Estudis Regionals and the VI Jornades Valencianes d’Estudis Regionals until 30 May 2019.
We take this opportunity to remind you that the Conference will take place at the Campus of the University Jaume I of Castelló, from the 20th to the 22th of November, 2019, with the motto "Tackling with societal, technological and climate challenges in peripheral territories.”. Conference sessions will include also a wide range of topics, grouped in 20 subject areas and 17 special sessions. We are pleased to announce that Prof. Professor Raquel Ortega Argilés (University of Birmingham) and Professor Jérôme Vicente (Université de Toulouse) will join the Conference as Keynote Speakers.
We have as a novelty in this edition a special issue of Regional Science Policy & Practice, a journal linked to the International Regional Science Association (RSAI), will be published on the conference theme, that is, Tackling with societal, technological and climate challenges in peripheral territories.
We will be grateful if you spread this information among any person that may be interested to participate. Abstracts should be no longer than 300 words and uploaded to the members' area. This year you can submit the results from ongoing research even if there is not a complete paper available yet. The Scientific Committe will consider for acceptance the submission of long abstracts, with a minimum extension of 1,500 words. Templates for all the types of abstracts, can download it from the webpage.
You can find all the information for registration and submission at the XLV Reunión de Estudios Regionales web page.
Looking forward to meet you at Castelló!
Greetings,
The Organizing Committee
Dear all,
We’re looking forward to seeing you in Cambridge soon.
We have two keynote speakers this year:
Dr Karyn Morrissey, European Centre for Environment and Human Health at the University of Exeter, will give our annual Spatial Economic Analysis lecture (16 July, 2-3 pm), on the use of big data and spatial microsimulations in the study of health inequalities.
Dr Tom Forth, founder and CEO of imactivate, and Head of Data at ODILeeds, who give the Productivity Insights Network keynote (17 July, 2-3pm), on how big data, open algorithms, and new institutions can improve productivity policy in the UK.
A few more details also on our social programme this year:
16 July, 7pm - Annual edition of Calvin’s legendary pub quiz, in the atmospheric Howard Building drawing room at Downing College, with refreshments and informal dinner provided
17-18 July, 8-9am - Our new morning fitness sessions, taking place on the grounds of Downing College (with changing facilities available), featuring stretching and retro-aerobics, with complimentary t-shirts (please let us know your size when registering)
17 July, 7pm - Free evening to explore Cambridge, or join us for a real ale pub tour, featuring a small sample of the more than 100 historic pubs of Cambridge
18 July, 2-5pm - Excursion to Wicken Fen, a unique fenland wildlife sanctuary and historic landscape, and one of the National Trust’s oldest holdings (see here for an overview of the Wicken Fen conservation programme: https://bit.ly/2ekEz8q). We will be taking a guided tour with one of their conservation volunteers, and will have an afternoon cream tea in the nature reserve, before returning to Cambridge by coach in time for dinner
18 July, 7pm - Drinks reception in the Fellows’ Garden, and candle-lit dinner in the beautiful dining hall at Downing College, plus prize-giving ceremony for our early career and Moss Madden medal prizes
Some practical notes: please book your accommodation as soon as possible, because Cambridge fills up very quickly in July. We are holding a number of rooms at Downing College, and there are links to other accommodation options on our website: http://www.rsai-bis.org/accommodation.html. A small number of parking places are also available. Please let us know asap if you would like to book a parking place.
The deadline for the early-bird fee registration is the 7th June 2019, and this is also the deadline for speakers to be registered for inclusion in the conference programme. You can register online at http://www.rsai-bis.org/registration-and-payment.html
If you would like to nominate any papers for the Moss Madden Memorial Medal please do so by e-mailing Kim Swales with reference to the paper at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
As in previous years, we are holding a Twitter competition, with prizes for the best and most popular tweets about the conference, using the hashtag #rsaibis2019.
We are very much looking forward to seeing you all in Cambridge!
Best wishes,
Maria (Chair) and Justin (Secretary), on behalf of the organising committee
