Digital Support Tools for Smart Cities

Socio-Economic Planning Sciences (SEPS) will publish a special issue focusing on smart cities. In recent years we have witnessed a wealth of new digital information technologies that are not only supporting tools for achieving smart cities, but also evolving into independent information systems shaping the future of metropolitan areas. Modern cities tend to become a ‘constellation of computers’, with innovative ‘control and command’ tools.
Novel applications in the public sector – in support of smart cities – can be found inter alia in infrastructure planning, facilities planning, intelligent transportation systems and e-democracy initiatives. The use of cyber data in the private sector is also drastically increasing, e.g., in the field of logistics or e-tourism. And finally, households appear to be the new users of digital information, e.g., entertainment decisions (through Twitter or Facebook), teleshopping. These developments support the hypothesis that the future of cities will largely be determined by cyber space applications. And therefore, a key question this special issue aims to answer is: what is the role of digital technologies in developing smart cities?
The special issue of SEPS on Digital Support Tools for Smart Cities aims to bring together a collection of high-quality contributions on the potential and use of digital information technology for smart cities. In this context, papers exploring the opportunities provided by ‘big data’ and data mining techniques are also welcome. In addition to intra-metropolitan studies, we also encourage the submission of papers analyzing the digital connectivity linkages between cities. The emphasis of all selected papers will be on applied quantitative studies that are potentially helpful in tackling public sector decision-making problems.
