The Entrepreneurship and Family Enterprise Research International Conference (EFERIC), will be held at the Queen Margaret University (Edinburgh, Scotland, UK), from the 27th to the 29th June 2018.

Description: Applications are invited for a tenure-track position starting on August 15, 2018.

Qualifications: The department seeks a candidate who is student-oriented, an excellent teacher, and who has an active research agenda. The incumbent must meet Academic Qualifications for AACSB maintenance of accreditation; and is expected to contribute to Department and School initiatives in the community, such as applied research relating to the regional economy and networking related to his or her experience.

Required Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in Economics earned by the start date of August 15, 2018.
Primary field of specialization in urban and regional economics.
Experience in regional modeling.
Demonstrated record of excellent teaching, and an active research agenda.

Preferred Qualifications:
PhD acquired after 2013.
Experience in regional modeling, using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software.
Secondary fields of specialization in applied microeconomics, such as Industrial Organization, or Applied Econometrics.

Compensation: Commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The centre for sustainable healthy Learning Cities at the University of Glasgow is one of the 37 major projects funded by the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) Research Councils UK Collective Fund, which aims to build upon research knowledge in the UK, and strengthen capacity overseas, to help address challenges in the developing countries (http://www.rcuk.ac.uk/media/news/170721/). SHLC will conduct comparative studies of urbanisation and the formation and differentiation of neighbourhoods in cities in order to address the challenges associated with large-scale rural-to-urban migration in Africa and Asia; and to strengthen research capacity among urban researchers, government officials and policy makers in the public and private sectors both in the UK and in developing countries. The Centre, based at Glasgow, has eight international partners in South Africa, Tanzania, Rwanda, India, Bangladesh, China and the Philippines. The Centre’s research programme will involve neighbourhood level analysis in 14 case study cities located in these countries.
The jobs require expert knowledge in the areas of education, health, or urban studies in relation to developing countries from the perspective of development studies, geography, urban planning, urban studies, migration, public policy, economics or another relevant social science discipline.
 
Specifically, we expect each of the five posts to contribute specialist knowledge to the Centre in at least one of the following areas:
• Cities, urbanisation and urban development in Africa, South Asia and/or East Asia
• Education policy and provision in developing countries
• Health policies and health provision in developing countries
• Quantitative research and analytical skills including social survey, spatial analysis, GIS, Big Data
• Qualitative research and analytical skills and methods
The post-holders will also contribute to the formulation and submission of research publications and research proposals as well as help manage and direct this complex and challenging project as opportunities allow.

Call for Special Sessions ERSA 2018

The Local Organizing Committee of the 58th ERSA Congress in Cork, Ireland (August 28th – August 31st 2018) invite you to propose a Special Session to be included in the programme of next year’s conference. Please, send in your proposal before December 8th 2017.

We ask you to take note of the procedure and guidelines regarding Special Sessions at ERSA 2018:

What do we offer?
Special Sessions are a label of quality in the ERSA congress and we accommodate for this in several ways:

  • We aim to allow 30 minutes for each presentation slot in a Special Session
  • Each presentation in a Special Session will be assigned a discussant

What do we ask?

  • Each Special Session has a minimum of 4 registered presenters
  • Presenters apply for a special session on the basis of a draft
  • Paper or an extended abstract (deadline February 28th 2018)
  • Presentations are based on a draft paper that has been uploaded on the ERSA 2018 submission website before June 9th 2018

If a Special Session does not meet the conditions, it will still be included in the programme, labelled as an O-session.

Chair, Department of Geography and Earth Sciences
The University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications and nominations for the Chair of the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences, effective July 1, 2018. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and rank. Candidate requirements include: 1) a doctoral degree in a field in or related to one of the Department’s academic programs (Geography, Geology, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Environmental Studies and Meteorology); 2) credentials and experience appropriate for a senior‐level appointment at a growing, urban doctoral university classified as having high research activity; 3) demonstrated ability and experience in administration and leadership of multidisciplinary groups; 4) a record of securing external funding; 5) and a demonstrated commitment to promote diversity as a value in the department, college and university.
The selected candidate will have the ability to oversee the continued advancement, success, and reputation of the Department. They will demonstrate that they can: creatively and strategically manage the Department’s budget; encourage and mentor faculty in securing external grants and in achieving excellence in research, teaching and service; lead and support a large staff whose duties range from academic administration to technical lab support; sustain the growth, health and success of degree programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels; support interdisciplinary programs and centers; and attract and retain top‐tier faculty.
The Department of Geography and Earth Sciences is currently comprised of 34 full‐time faculty, notably from a broad array of disciplinary backgrounds, and 8 full‐time staff. We house a student population of over 350 undergraduates, 70 masters students, and 25 doctoral students. Our mission is to create, extend and
disseminate applied and theoretical scientific knowledge of the Earth’s physical, natural, and human systems, and their interactions, through scholarly research, teaching, and service. The Department houses a Ph.D. program in Geography, and participates in two other interdisciplinary Ph.D. degree programs, Infrastructure and Environmental Systems and Public Policy. The Department also hosts the Center for Applied Geographic Information Sciences (CAGIS) and an MA in Geography, an MS in Earth Sciences and several undergraduate degree programs in the Geographic and Earth Sciences.

The Chairs of Economics and Social Policy, Sociology and Empirical Social Research (Friedrich-Alex-ander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU)) and Economic Geography and Location Research (Philipps-Universität Marburg), are very pleased to announce their joint interdisciplinary conference, which will take place in Marburg in March 2018. The conference aims to bring together researchers from various academic fields to present and discuss their current empirical and theoretical research regarding regional inequalities.

Objectives of the conference:
European regions show remarkable differences in living conditions in general, and particularly in eco-nomic and social conditions. The main objective of the conference is to share new research in the fields of economics, sociology, regional science and geography on this special topic. In the context of the current research project “Equal Living Conditions” of FAU (Nürnberg) and Philipps-Universität (Mar-burg), the conference aims to foster the scientific exchange on the perception, patterns, causes, effects and policy aspects of regional inequality, also across disciplines. To this end, current empirical and theoretical contributions of the several fields of research are welcomed. Contributions on the following issues, but not limited to, are particularly invited:
- Regional economic growth
- Convergence and divergence
- Regional and structural policy
- Intergovernmental grants
- Interregional fairness and justice
- Interregional migration
- Place-based policies
- Spatial dimensions of social and economic inequality

2017 Winner of RSAI Jean Paelinck Award

Professor Arthur Getis, a Professor Emeritus of Geography at San Diego State University, received the RSAI Jean Paelinck Award 2017. 

 

The Jean Paelinck Award recognizes and honors the truly outstanding scholarly achievement of a senior and internationally recognized regional scientist in the field of Regional Science Methods and it is awarded with the nomination of five RSAI Fellows, with the selection of the Jury and with the approval by the RSAI Council.
