The ERSA2020 will again offer the exciting and fresh format of Special Sessions. Special Sessions consist of in-depth discussions, knowledge sharing and best quality of presentations. They bring added value to our congress and contribute to making it the largest academic event in Regional Science worldwide.

This year's topic is Territorial Futures - Visions and scenarios to cope with megatrends in a changing Europe.

The Indiana Business Research Center at the Kelley School of Business, Indiana University, seeks applications for a one-year post-doc position with a possibility of a January 1, 2020 start. The candidate will be responsible for conducting research that will contribute both to the disciplines associated with regional science as well as to the regional economic development project currently funded by the Economic Development Administration at the Department of Commerce.

Regional economies are complex adaptive systems governed by networks of interdependencies, and have non-linear dynamics and trade-off attributes. The incumbent’s research will explore one key tradeoff in particular –economic efficiency and economic resilience.  While the research portfolio will be dominated by work applying a complex adaptive systems framework to model different regional sub-systems – particularly the entrepreneurial ecosystem – the candidate will also research how regions grow, adapt to shocks and respond to information and incentives. The empirical research portfolio will include several regional science disciplines, including entrepreneurship, economic resilience, inclusive growth, access to financial capital together with the determinants of poverty including the roles of automation and global competition, and the interdependence of rural and urban areas.

Qualifications: A PhD in a relevant field -- such as economics, regional science, regional planning or data science with a strong background in economics -- is required at the start of the appointment. The candidate will have extensive training in state-of-the-art economics or a related field and econometric analysis, including spatial statistics, as well as excellent communications and writing skills. Candidates with experience or training in complex adaptive systems are at an advantage. In addition, he or she will have extensive experience with a variety of statistical packages.  The candidate needs to be able to both work well independently and also to function effectively in a team setting.

NURTURING TALENT 2020

The RSAI aims to continue promoting the development of Regional Science by nurturing new talent in 2020. The council has therefore pledged resources to co-finance workshops and summer institutes intended to provide substantive training to pre-doctoral researchers, including the presentation of their work and receiving feedback from senior scholars and their peers. It is expected that the selected workshops and institutes will have considerable international geographical coverage.

Organizers of workshops and summer schools fulfilling the above aims are encouraged to submit a two-page case for support within November 4, 2019 to the RSAI secretariat (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.). Individuals are encouraged to consult with their national and supranational sections to allow better coordination among different initiatives.

All applications will be reviewed by the Committee and will have to be formally approved by the RSAI Council. Their decision will be final.

2020 conference participation support

The RSAI facilitates the participation of researchers from low-income and lower-middle-income economies (as defined by the World Bank: https://data.worldbank.org/about/country-and-lending-groups#Low_income) at the five largest Regional Science Conferences in 2020: LARSA, PRSCO, ERSA, NARSC, and the World Congress.

RSAI will provide a subsidy up to USD 500 (or the equivalent in other currencies) to selected researchers. This is likely to cover the conference registration fee and some local travel costs. Alternative means of financing will have to be sought for international travel and accommodation.

Only one author of a submitted paper presentation proposal can apply for a subsidy.

Interested researchers should upload a two-page CV plus a one-page motivation –including a budget with proposed sources of funding of the conference-related registration, travel and accommodation costs – within 30 days of receiving confirmation of the acceptance of the researcher’s abstract by the conference organizers.

Applicants should have had a paper accepted for presentation at the conference.

Recently, the OECD Trento centre has revamped its internship programme making it more flexible and comprehensive. Now, the applications are accepted any time for four 3-month internship periods during the year. We can be flexible in terms of the start and the end dates. The original internship duration can be extended several times up to 12 months of total duration.

  1. The Spatial Productivity Lab (SPL): a research-oriented programme with a strong empirical focus on regional development and productivity; currently, we work on several projects that leverage the micro-level and unconventional data.

with an area of study related to transnational illicit supply networks, starting August 16, 2020. The successful candidate’s broader research and teaching area of expertise will be in economic, political, and/or human-environment geography. The position is open regarding geographic area and illicit activity of focus. Research topics of specific interest include one or more aspects of illicit supply networks, particularly in relation to the spatiality of their operation, structural organization, and/or distribution of social and/or environmental harms. Topical specializations may include, but are not limited to: geographic information science, global commodity chain analysis, convergence with licit supply networks, financial transactions, social or trade network analysis, land and/or supply chain governance, or political corruption. Position Responsibilities: The Department of Community and Regional Planning (CRP) in the College of Design at Iowa State University is seeking to fill a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor starting August 16, 2020. The successful candidate will contribute to the mission of the department and the College of Design through teaching core planning courses and electives at the graduate and undergraduate levels. We are seeking an individual who will contribute to research and teaching in a broadly defined area of environmental planning and sustainable/resilient communities.
