British and Irish Section

The British and Irish Section's 2025 Annual Conference was a great success.

The British and Irish Section's 2025 Annual Conference was a great success

Delegates for the 51st annual conference enjoyed two days of sunshine, high quality research, and catching up with colleagues in Cork in mid June. The University College Cork campus looked its best and delegates were able to take full advantage of the surroundings with sessions taking place on the famous Main Quad.

Across the two days there were 21 well-attended parallel sessions, with papers from 68 delegates from Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Morocco, and the US.

The Section's journal, Spatial Economic Analysis, celebrated its twentieth anniversary with a special session chaired by the founding editor-in-chief, Professor Bernard Fingleton, and papers from Professor Roberta Cappello, ERAS President in her first visit to the British and Irish Section conference, and Professor Marc Bartelemy. There was brilliant early career plenary lecture from Dr Conor O'Driscoll of the University of Groningen.

The conference dinner at the Glucksman Gallery will be a special memory of Cork for all delegates and the Section committee are already planning for the 2026 conference which will be in Belfast next May. Watch out for more details on the section website.

Dr Sabine D'Costa awarded the 2024 Moss Madden Memorial Medal by Professor Calvin Jones.

The Moss Madden Memorial Medal is awarded annually by the British and Irish Section to the member that publishes the best paper in regional science that year. The Medal for 2024 was awarded to Dr Sabine D'Costa of the University of Westminster for her paper "Re-evaluating the urban wage premium: the changing roles of geographical and job transitions for women and men", published in the Regional Science and Urban Economics.

The paper was selected by a jury of past winners, chaired by Professor Calvin Jones, who described the paper as exceptional. In his presentation of the award he noted the "subject was important, interesting and deeply policy relevant. The method was thoughtful, well researched and diligently implemented with good data. The author had also given proper consideration to any potential pitfalls. Finally, this was a technical paper that was written extremely clearly and straightforwardly. In summary that rare thing - a paper of which it was difficult to ask more".

Congratulations Sabine!
