Proposals Submission Deadline: September 30, 2017
Full Chapters Due: December 30, 2017

Introduction

To be competitive in the global arena, regions must be capable of develop key capabilities in the exploitations of their resources and strengths. Smart specialization strategies are a new approach to the problem of competitiveness and differentiation in global arena assuming that the “one size fits all” model cannot be the solution to the problem.
To accomplish this, higher education institutions are key partners as a driver to innovation, knowledge and social capital building and valuation, as well as, pivotal institutions for strategy formulation and foresight and scenario building. The links between the entrepreneurial university paradigm and the implementation of smart specialization strategies are thus discussed as a means to deepen the understanding of this institutional, entrepreneurial and territorial dynamics that is evolving towards a new competitive paradigm based on knowledge and innovation.

Objective

The theoretical concept of the ‘entrepreneurial university’ is something of a buzzword amongst academics and policy makers alike. Yet the concept is under-theorised and has proven difficult to translate into a concrete policy approach. Smart specialization strategies have, however, enhanced our theoretical understanding and provided policy makers and other actors in the regional economy with a practical tool for tackling some of the underlying problems faced by territories suffering from economic decline, stagnation or under-development in the field of innovation. The main objective of the book is to provide a comprehensive review of the relation between the role entrepreneurial universities are playing on the context of the creation of smart specialization strategies, either in conceptual and methodological terms, either in terms of the challenges it raises in terms of regional innovation policy and the impact on territorial competitiveness. The book also aims to describe and examine diverse case studies, looking in particular at the relevance of design, implementation, adjustment, governance, networking and collaboration entrepreneurial universities adopt or promote to reinforce regional competitiveness in the context of smart specialization strategies.
The publication has its impact associated to the need that it is urgent and vital to continue to rethink the role universities can fullfil on their territories, now, more than ever before, that society requires higher education institutions to be increasingly territorially embedded and at the same time to be global scientific and technological players. Thus, the book can be very helpful and contribute to enrich this debate in the context of a newly emerging paradigm, the entrepreneurial university.
The book value is potentially associated to its innovative analytical dimensions, the richness of the different authors' contributions and the high quality academic standards the editors guarantee.

Target Audience

The target audience is constituted by academics and students from different disciplinary areas, such as economy, geography, entrepreneurial studies, innovation studies, political sciences, public administration,… Moreover, policy makers, at local regional and national level, are also a target, as well as other regional actors, namely belonging to the university management sphere, entrepreneurial associations, local and regional associations, …
The potential use is both for academic purposes, due to its scientific and pedagogic levels, at graduate and undergraduate levels, and, on a way, a manual and guide for the diverse regional innovation stakeholders.
